The short version

Verify your profile, use your real business name, pick the most specific primary category, and keep your hours, including public holidays, up to date. Add real photos and your services, then keep a steady flow of reviews coming in and reply to them. Avoid the two most common causes of suspension: keywords in your business name and a virtual office address.

What’s changed recently

Google has been phasing out the Questions and answers section on Business Profiles, after switching off the chat feature in 2024. It now increasingly answers customers’ questions with AI, drawing on your profile details, your website and your reviews. That makes complete, accurate information and a healthy number of recent reviews more important than ever.

Common questions

Can I put keywords in my Google business name?

No. Your name must match the name you use in the real world, on your signage, website and stationery. Adding suburbs, services or taglines breaks Google’s guidelines and can get your profile suspended.

Should a home-based business show its address on Google?

No. If customers don’t visit you, clear the address from your profile and set a service area instead. Only show an address if you have signage there and receive customers during your stated hours.

How many categories should I choose?

As few as possible. Choose the most specific primary category, then add additional categories only for genuine parts of your business. Google allows up to nine additional categories, but more isn’t better.

How often should I update my Google Business Profile?

Check it at least once a month, add public holiday hours ahead of time, and update it straight away whenever your hours, phone number or services change. Adding new photos and posts regularly also shows customers you’re active.

What happened to Questions and answers on Google?

Google has been phasing out the public Questions and answers section and now answers many customer questions with AI, using your profile information, website and reviews. Make sure those are complete and accurate.
